Coping with Menopause and Weight Gain

Menopause and weight gain seem to go hand in hand, but they don't have to. Here's how to keep the extra pounds off as your hormones change.


Going through menopause is a difficult enough process, you don’t want to he to worry about gaining weight too, but unfortunately that’s a part of the package for many women.  No matter what you do it can seem you’re going to gain some weight going through the process, and that can be extremely frustrating.  But there are solutions out there so that you can minimize the issue, or so that you can stave off gaining weight at all.  But it is going to take due diligence on your part, and you’re going to find that there’s a lot you’re going to have to do when it comes to getting and keeping your body as fit as you want it to be.

You’ll find that when it comes to menopause and weight gain, you have to realize that you have to think about the problem differently than you ever have done before.  The problem when you’re going through menopause is that your body goes through all sorts of changes, and you then have to change and adapt to the circumstance in different ways, if you want to stay on top and ensure that you can keep at a healthy weight that still allows you to feel fit and confident.  It will be a constant battle, but here are the things you’ll want to look at and pay attention to when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off:

1. Realize that you’re fighting a different battle.

The first thing that you have to understand about menopause and weight gain is that it’s not like the normal gain that you will encounter throughout your life.  Normally weight gain is related to just eating more than you’re working off, but with menopause even if you haven’t changed your eating habits you can still end up gaining a lot of weight.  In fact on average women tend to gain around 12 to 15 pounds throughout menopause.  And you also have to realize that your metabolism slows down around 5% overall every decade that you’re alive.  That means both things are going to be hitting you at once, which can be hard to deal with.

2. That’s why the right type of workout routine is in order.

The best way that you can make a really positive impact is just to be sure that you’re taking part in the right type of workout routine.  You’re going to find that there are some exercises that women just don’t participate in that are necessities for staying and getting into shape, and here are a few factors to keep in mind:

Don’t skimp on the weight training

A massive mistake that many women make is not weight training, and that’s where you lose out on the work that really increases and maintains metabolism.  The problem when you’re actually not weight training is that your body isn’t able to build and maintain muscle.  But many women are afraid of weight lifting because of the misconception it will give you body building muscles, but those are only created from years of toil, and lifting really heavy weights.

Regular aerobic and cardiovascular exercise

You also want to be sure that you’re conscious of regular exercise like performing aerobics and cardiovascular routines because it keeps all of your muscles and your body on the whole in good condition.  This is one of the key ways to burn calories, and to deal with menopause and weight gain limiting the impact it will have on your body overall.

Make sure you’re keeping your activity up throughout the day

This is a major factor that many people just are not aware of, but if you have the type of job where you have to spend a lot of time sitting down, you’ll find that it’s going to have a negative impact on your body as it slows down the metabolism.  So if you want to successfully menopause lose weight with a fitness program, then you’re going to need to keep moving all throughout the day.

As you get older you just have to change things like your eating habits, to make sure you can keep with the adjustments your body is going through.  That means you’re going to want to avoid things that you used to enjoy like coffee or sodas, and you instead want to go with something like water and green tea for example.  That way you’re cutting calories, and with something like tea it actually raises metabolism which is going to help you keep fit and thin.
